The fabric is heavy wool felt with gold metallic thread braid - around the collar and on the cuffs. The braid on the collar has become detached and needs to be refixed in place. There are a couple of glue spots where the braid was attached to the collar but these would be hidden once the braid is refixed. The coat is double breasted and can fasten either to the right or left. The original shoulder epaulettes have been removed and a piece of modern gold braid has been used to replace them.
The gold braid on the cuffs and pocket flaps is original and in good condition. There are 16 buttons on the front of the coat - three buttons on each sleeve and three buttons under each pocket flap.
There are a further four buttons on the back of the coat at the back vent. The tail section of the coat is lined with cream wool felt fabric - this has a few spot marks but is in good condition.
The lining on the upper part of the coat has shattered - as silk does with age - and is in poor condition so would need to be replaced. This is a rare item and in reasonable condition for the age. The outer coat is very good and just needs the collar braid refixing. Size - as with all clothing from 100 years ago - size is very small.Chest size 36 inches - armpit to armpit 18 1/2 inches. Shoulder to shoulder 18 inches. Sleeve length from shoulder seam to cuff 26 inches. Coat length from nape of neck to hem 42 inches.
