An extremely rare Queen Anne Two Guineas. Year 1711, London Mint, 22 carat gold, diameter 31mm, weight 16.8g. Graded PCGS Extremely Fine 45. One of only four graded by PCGS and probably under graded.
If graded today I believe the coin would be AU 50 or 53. A really beautiful portrait of Anne with no blemishes and stunning detail. The much larger portrait on the double guinea (the diameter of a two pence) exquisitely enhances all features both on the obverse and reverse.Collectors of early guineas will know that gradable Queen Anne's are extremely rare, indeed graded double Anne guineas are almost impossible to obtain. There never were very many minted in the first place, almost all have been melted down or destroyed over the centuries. The remaining ones almost always have problems ranging from ex-jewellery to cleaning, and are not gradable on the Sheldon scale. Even many of the apparently trouble free raw coins on offer have in the past been graded and been rejected on inspection.
